Piotr Bartyzel

Dr. Piotr Bartyzel received his undergraduate and graduate education in Chemical Engineering and Organic Chemistry from the Cracow University of Technology (Politechnika) and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University (Akademia Medyczna), royal charter 1364, in Cracow, Poland.

Dr. Piotr Bartyzel joined the Walker Cancer Research Institute, Inc. at the Florida Natural Products Division in Tallahassee, Florida in January 1999. Before joining the WCRI Dr. P. Bartyzel served as a Visiting Scientist at the Medical College of Virginia of the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and a research faculty at the College of Pharmacy and the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) at University, Mississippi.

Over the last ten years his research interests gradually shifted from the studies of the central nervous system (serotonin) to immunomodulation (complement cascade) to be driven recently by the humanitarian needs deeply into the cancer issue (potential anticancer agents of natural products /marine origin).

In April 2002 he left his position with WCRI, but still keeps a professional relation with the Institute, as a Consultant.

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Dr. P. Bartyzel major objective and research methodology is to apply the rationality of medicinal chemistry to natural products research with a goal towards developing anti-cancer pharmaceuticals.

Executing the WCRI mission, Dr. P. Bartyzel is currently studying bio-accumulators of cytotoxic secondary metabolites having properties to inhibit growth/proliferation of tumor cells. These research goals are being pursued by studying marine invertebrates, plants, and fungi available at the Florida Coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
